I have tried the solution where you stop the VM and adjust the configuration. I'd also like to add, it wasn't a bad CD drive. Then, something struck me. I started the laptop back up and did not put the Windows XP Home SP3 CD back in. It has no scratches as far as I can tell and begins the initial file copy at the blue screen without any problem.

Trying to repair. I just couldn't find any audio drivers for the sound card and that is very important for the user, so I'm trying XP Home SP3 again and getting the above error. I have found this simple trick works, soemtimes when windows has had a bad shutdown it changes the boot.ini. just after it loads the GUI.
