I'm using mac mail and don't have safari mail. I've checked password, and all other standard 'is it plugged in?' kind of things - I've gone into the config editor and upped the timeouts of mailnews.tcptimeout, mail.server.server1.timeout, etc. Still not working today. If it is an IMAP account, you will not lose any messages as part of this process.
Is Authentication listed as "password" with your username being your full email address and the password being your mailbox password? Are you setting this up using Mac Mail or Outlook for Mac?
