Please don't fill out this field. Samba Add User By default (when run with no arguments) it will attempt to change the current user's SMB password on the local machine. When run by root, smbpasswd accesses the local smbpasswd file directly, thus enabling changes to be made even if smbd is not running. Found the answer on page 38 of the Debian Reference.

Do I have to create a system user for every samba user? Why isn't the religion of R'hllor, The Lord of Light, dominant? This is similar to the way the passwd(1) program works. Turns out I forgot to add the user name as a Samba user.
